Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has appointed new chief executives to head three key institutions in Kenya's energy sector: the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), the Geothermal Development Company (GDC) and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Tom Odhiambo Imbo, a certified public accountant with roughly a decade of experience at KETRACO, has been named the transmission company's new managing director and chief executive. Stephen Kipsang Busieney, who had been serving as GDC's acting managing director and CEO, moves into the substantive role after years in senior finance leadership at the geothermal developer. Edward Mwirigi Kinyua, an engineer with more than 14 years of experience in the petroleum sector, including stints at Total Kenya and the former Energy Regulatory Commission, takes over as EPRA's Director-General.

The ministry said the appointments, which take effect immediately, followed competitive recruitment processes carried out by each institution's own board of directors, in line with the State Corporations Act, the Companies Act and the Energy Act. "The appointments, which are to take effect immediately, are a culmination of rigorous recruitment processes undertaken in accordance with the applicable laws and relevant Human Resource guidelines by the respective Boards of Directors of KETRACO, GDC and EPRA," Wandayi said in a statement.

Wandayi congratulated the three appointees and expressed confidence in their leadership as the government continues to pursue its plans for the energy and petroleum sector.

KETRACO is responsible for developing and managing Kenya's high-voltage electricity transmission grid. GDC develops the country's geothermal energy resources, a major source of Kenya's power generation. EPRA regulates the country's broader energy and petroleum industries, including setting monthly fuel price caps.
