The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has approved the reservation of the name "Linda Mwananchi Movement" (LMM), clearing a significant obstacle for the political outfit associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as it moves toward formal registration ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a letter dated Oct. 1, Registrar of Political Parties John Lorionokou confirmed the approval under Section 4B of the Political Parties Act, addressed to Suba South MP Caroli Omondi. "Pursuant to the judgment in PPDTA/E001/2026 Michael Caroli Omondi & Another vs Registrar of Political Parties and Section 8 of the PPA, your application for the name Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) has been approved," the letter read. The reservation runs for up to 90 days from the date of the letter.

The approval follows a Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) ruling on Sept. 30 that set aside the Registrar's earlier Aug. 7 decision declining to reserve the name and its abbreviation. "The decision by the Registrar declining to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi is hereby set aside," the Tribunal ruled, ordering the Registrar to reconsider the application within seven days. The Tribunal found that the Registrar's original refusal lacked legal justification, that an earlier reservation of a similar name, Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya, held by Charles Wanyonyi, had already lapsed by operation of law and could not be used to block the new application, and that the Linda Mwananchi Movement name was sufficiently distinct in wording, sound and meaning from the existing Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA), commonly known as Linda Party. The Tribunal further found that LINDA was not a fully registered political party and therefore lacked legal standing to participate in the proceedings, striking out its pleadings as an interested party. It also noted that the Registrar's refusal to reserve Linda Mwananchi while separately reserving a similarly named outfit, The Mwananchi Party, on Aug. 3, was inconsistent with the Registrar's own established practice.

The underlying dispute was brought by Omondi, Pauline Njoroge and Faith Odhiambo, who identify themselves as founders of the Linda Mwananchi Movement. The Tribunal's ruling did not itself register Linda Mwananchi as a political party, nor did it rule on Wanyonyi's separate, earlier February 2026 application for a similarly named outfit, which he claims predates Sifuna's June application.
