Siaya Governor James Orengo has officially entered the 2027 presidential conversation, signalling his intention to compete for Kenya’s top political office as political realignments continue to take shape ahead of the next General Election. Speaking on Friday, August 28, 2026, during the burial of Steven Onyango, son of Linda Mwananchi advocate Newton Ogada, in Homa Bay County, Orengo criticised President William Ruto and questioned his commitment to the Constitution. Orengo argued that Ruto’s past position on the Constitution contrasted with his current role as President, saying this had contributed to some of the challenges facing the country. He also addressed Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’, who has recently drawn attention over comments perceived as showing support for President Ruto. Turning directly to Kajwang’, Orengo announced that he had resolved to seek the presidency in 2027 and described himself as a serious contender. “Kajwang, I am here. From today, know that I am the presidential candidate. A serious presidential candidate,” Orengo said. The announcement places Orengo among the growing number of political figures positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential contest. Orengo declaration raises questions within Linda Mwananchi His announcement could also spark fresh debate over the political direction of the Linda Mwananchi movement, particularly as the group seeks to establish a united opposition front ahead of 2027. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has emerged as one of the movement's most prominent figures, frequently taking centre stage during its nationwide mobilisation activities. His supporters have increasingly portrayed him as a potential presidential candidate for the movement. The development comes shortly after discussions emerged over plans to transform Linda Mwananchi into a formal political organisation, with Sifuna remaining an influential figure in the process. Orengo's decision to publicly declare his presidential ambitions therefore introduces another senior political figure seeking the top position from within the same opposition space. This could raise questions about whether the movement will eventually settle on a single presidential candidate or have to manage competing ambitions among its leading members. There has, however, been no formal announcement indicating that Linda Mwananchi has split. Its leaders have continued to emphasise the need to unite opposition forces behind one candidate to challenge President Ruto. Orengo had earlier received endorsement The governor's announcement follows growing political support for his presidential ambitions. Earlier in August, delegates associated with Linda Mwananchi from Homa Bay and Migori counties reportedly endorsed Orengo as the movement's leader and preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election. The endorsement came as the opposition movement intensified its activities in Nyanza and Western Kenya, bringing together several prominent politicians, including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza. By publicly declaring his intention to run, Orengo has now moved beyond receiving political endorsements to personally confirming his presidential ambitions. Veteran politician enters presidential race Orengo brings decades of political and constitutional experience to the emerging 2027 race. He has previously served as Ugenya MP, Lands Minister, Siaya Senator and Senate Minority Leader before being elected Siaya Governor in 2022. His presidential ambitions are also not new. In 2002, Orengo contested the presidency but was unsuccessful. He later worked closely with Raila Odinga within ODM, becoming one of the party's prominent constitutional lawyers and a key figure during several election-related disputes. His involvement in Kenya's democratic struggle dates back to the era of one-party rule under former President Daniel arap Moi. Orengo was among politicians and lawyers who pushed for political reforms, multiparty democracy and constitutional change, establishing his reputation as a longstanding constitutional activist.
